Vang Vieng: to go or not to go?

Vang Vieng è una piccola città 150km a nord di Vientiane, posta sul fiume Nam Song, e rappresenta uno dei posti più spettacolari del Laos.

Le montagne carsiche che la circondano, il fiume, le grotte e le scogliere sono veramente scenici e attirano una barca di turisti, anche perchè questa zona si è guadagnata il titolo di uno dei migliori siti per arrampicata di tutto il Sud Est asiatico.

Questa è la parte che cercavamo di Vang Vieng. L’abbiamo trovata e ci è piaciuta molto. Ha arricchito ancora di più la nostra idea di quanto bello sia il Laos.

Girare in bicicletta tra le campagne circondate da montagne alla ricerca di grotte che custodiscono altari buddhisti è senza dubbio il genere di avventura che amiamo. Contatto con l’ambiente a 360°.

C’è però un’altro lato di Vang Vieng, che la rende molto popolare sopratutto tra i backpackers.

Durante l’alta stagione questo luogo viene invaso da ragazzi che della natura non gliene può fregare di meno. L’attività alla quale tutti puntano è il tubing.

Cos’è il tubing? Consiste semplicemente nel farsi trascinare dalla corrente del fiume sopra un ciambellone di gomma, facendo pit-stop in tutti i baracchini posti lungo le sponde per scolarsi un drink dietro l’altro.

Risultato? Alle 18:00 sono già tutti ubriachi che si trascinano per le vie della città.

Somiglia ad una vaga imitazione di Koh Phangan, che però rimane la regina indiscussa delle feste nel Sud Est Asiatico.

Parlando con il gestore della guesthouse dove alloggiavamo abbiamo capito che ci sono stati incidenti anche piuttosto gravi negli ultimi tempi per colpa di questo tubing, ma che rispetto agli ultimi anni la situazione stava cambiando perchè la polizia era molto più severa. Inoltre Vang Vieng in generale stava attirando sempre di più un genere diverso di turismo più rispettoso e attirato dalle bellezze naturali.

Siamo dell’idea che il divertimento, soprattutto in zone così remote e sconosciute, sia tale se affrontato con testa. Le feste in questi paesi sono fighissime, ma l’idea di rischiare grosso a centinaia di chilometri da casa non ci elettrizza particolarmente.

Detto ciò, Vang Vieng rimane comunque una meta meravigliosa da vedere e da esplorare. C’è la possibilità di fare Kayak lungo il fiume, o noleggiare un motorino e guidare attraverso le campagne circostanti dove i villaggi sono fermi nel tempo.

Quindi in conclusione, andare o no a Vang Vieng? Assolutamente si, ma con testa.

Vang Vieng is a small city, 150 km north of Vientiane, developed along the Nam Song river and represents one of the most spectacular places in Laos.

It’s surrounded by karst mountains, these together with the river, the caves and the cliffs constitute a very unique landscape. All these attract tons of tourists from all over the world, also because this area is placed on the top 10 of the best places for climbing in South East Asia.

This was the side of Vang Vieng that we were looking forward to discovering. We found it and we loved it. This convinced us that Laos is a wonderful country to visit.

This is the type of adventure we love, connected at 360 degrees to nature, wandering around the countryside with our bicycles, trying to find mysterious caves that protect Buddhist temples.

But there is another side of Vang Vieng, the one that became very popular among backpackers tourists. In fact, during the high season, this place is invaded by youngsters who are not really bothered to discover this place and who don’t care at all about the surrounding nature. They come here only for one attraction: tubing.

What is tubing? It consists simply on getting carried away by the river stream on a rubber donut, making pit-stops in all the stalls placed along the riverbanks to quickly swallow a drink after another. The results? At 6.00 everyone is drunk and they drag themselves through the city’s streets.

This place is an imitation of Koh Phangan, although it remains the undisputed party queen of all south East Asia.

After talking to the manager of the guest house where we were staying, we realised that there were quite serious accidents lately because of this tubing, but compared to previous years the situation was changing because the police was much more aware and strict. Also Vang Vieng was attracting more and more tourists with a much more respectful attitude towards their environment and culture. The type of tourism in this area is fortunately changing…

We believe that having fun is important but, especially in areas so remote and endangered like these, people should think twice before acting and be respectful. We should never forget that we are guests in this country, it is not our own home. Parties are so cool in Laos, but the idea of ruing our reputation or even risking our lives so far from home is not really worth it.

That said, Vang Vieng is still a wonderful place to visit and explore. There is the possibility of doing kayak along the river, or to rent a motorbike and drive through the surrounding countryside where villages are still untouched and unaltered by time (non saprei come metterla sta parte).

So in the end…. To go or not to go to Vang Vieng? Absolutely yes…but bear in mind to use your brain.
